What is eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, improves the changes made by aging surrounding the upper and/or lower eyelids and gives a rejuvenated appearance to the eye area for a more rested, and alert look. Dr. Vu Ho, a Plano, TX facial plastic surgeon, performs the surgery for aging patients with excessive skin and fat in the eye area. The surgery can also help diminish lines and wrinkles around the eyes.

Upper lid surgery addresses the loose skin hanging above the eyes. Dr. Ho makes an incision that follows the natural crease of the upper eyelid to remove excess skin and fatty tissue. Lower lid surgery is a similar process, with the incision following just under the lower lash line, or hidden behind the eyelid. Fat pockets are removed or repositioned to diminish the looks of “bags” under the eyes. In addition, excessive skin below is removed or tightened with laser treatment.

What are the benefits of eyelid surgery?

With increasing age, our eyes can betray us in a variety of aesthetic and functional ways. Our Plano, TX patients who receive a blepharoplasty from Dr. Ho enjoy a number of benefits, some of which include:

  • Removal of excess skin from the eyelid and brow bone
  • Increase of access to peripheral vision
  • Procedure that addresses both upper and lower eyelids
  • Rejuvenated and more youthful appearance

Who is a candidate for eyelid surgery?

The best candidates for eyelid surgery:

  • Have eyelid issues that cause them to look older
  • Have vision problems caused by droopy eyelids
  • Have droopy, down-turned eyelids as a result of aging or genetics
  • Have bags under the eyes
  • Desire a more refreshed, rejuvenated appearance
  • Desire a natural look

What to Expect during eyelid surgery

Upper Eyelid Surgery

For upper eyelid surgery, the surgeon will make the incision within the natural fold of the eyelid. The incision will be extended outward as much as possible in order to address the extraneous skin folds located on the outside of the upper lid. After the incision is carefully made, the surgeon will remove the excessive fat and skin. Afterwards, the incision will be stitched close with absorbable sutures, which do not require removal by the surgeon.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

For lower eyelid surgery, the incision will be placed along the bottom of the lash line to allow the plastic surgeon access to remove the extraneous fat and tissue. A special technique used for patients with puffy lower lids but good skin tone is called transconjunctival blepharoplasty. Patients with dark under eye circles caused by a lack of fat in the area could benefit from injectables or fat fillers to add volume to the area.

Upper and Lower Combined

With some patients, both the lower and upper eyelids need to be addressed to correct all issues effectively. When both are combined, surgery can last around 2 hours.

Eyelid surgery FAQs

Are you put to sleep for eyelid surgery?

No, Dr. Ho will use a local anesthetic to numb the treatment area to keep you from feeling any discomfort, but you will remain awake. You can also take advantage of our PRO-NOX™ system that uses a nitrous oxide blend that you control to regulate anxiety and any potential discomfort you may feel. It is very similar to what a dentist uses for dental procedures.

How long does eyelid surgery take?

If you are having both upper and lower eyelids done, you can expect the surgery to last about two hours.

How long does it take to recover from eyelid surgery?

Generally, you can expect your eyelids to be bruised and swollen for about 1 – 3 weeks after the surgery. The overall appearance of your eyes will continue to improve over the next three months. Most patients are ready to continue their regular activities after about two weeks.

What is the best age to get eyelid surgery?

Unless the eyelids are obstructing the vision of the patient, it is generally not recommended to have eyelid surgery if you are younger than 18. With that being said, eyelid surgery can be done at any age.

Does eyelid surgery hurt?

Most people will experience little to no pain or discomfort during their eyelid surgery. The combination of local anesthesia and our PRO-NOX system helps to ensure you will remain comfortable during the entire procedure.
